Axel Koschier is a speculative catalogue that shatters the classic genre of artist monographs and embraces interpretation and fiction as an integral part of an artist’s biography.
The book object - an art book by Axel Koschier - consists of a collection of forms and questionnaires that are usually collected by companies to profile information from their customers. These are presented in the book on painted backgrounds by the artist, each on a double page in four-color print. The image pages are interspersed with six texts. Based on the same information about Axel Koschier, authors were asked to write texts in their native languages (English, Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese, French). “This resulted in fictional portraits that range from early childhood to the artist's psyche.”
The particularly soft, French flap brochure draws its flexibility from a 70 gsm kraft paper made from cellulose, which is usually used as packaging or filler material. The special feature of the artist appearing as a “semi-fictional” person in the book is accompanied by a consistent printing experiment in beautiful and reprinting: The mirror-inverted text is merely translucent on the text pages.
Designed by Astrid Seme, the book was published with Mark Pezinger Books (Astrid Seme, Thomas Geiger). Such an integral book production makes it possible to blur the boundaries between how the design of an art book is created and how it appears in the book object.
